Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary to protect your overall oral health and relieve pain when a tooth cannot be saved. At Forest Hills Dental Associates, extractions are performed with a focus on comfort, safety, and clear communication—so you know what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.
An extraction may be recommended for severe decay, advanced gum disease, a cracked tooth that extends below the gumline, or infection that cannot be resolved with restorative treatment. Extractions are also sometimes needed to create space for orthodontic care or to remove problematic wisdom teeth. Before treatment, your dentist will evaluate the tooth, surrounding bone, and nearby structures using an exam and digital X-rays to plan the safest approach.
Most extractions are completed with local anesthetic to numb the area, and additional comfort options may be available depending on your needs. After the tooth is removed, your dentist will provide detailed aftercare instructions to support healing, minimize swelling, and reduce the risk of complications such as dry socket. You’ll typically be advised to bite on gauze to control bleeding, avoid smoking and straws for a period of time, eat soft foods, and keep the area clean as directed.
Replacing an extracted tooth is often important for long-term function and alignment. Your dentist can discuss options such as dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures to help prevent shifting, bite changes, and bone loss in the area.
Forest Hills Dental Associates takes a patient-focused approach to extractions, emphasizing gentle technique, effective pain control, and a clear plan for recovery and tooth replacement when needed—so you can return to a healthier, more comfortable smile.
