Dental bridges are a dependable restorative option for replacing one or more missing teeth and restoring a complete, functional smile. At Forest Hills Dental Associates, bridges are designed to look natural, improve chewing and speech, and help prevent the shifting and bite changes that can occur when a tooth is missing.
A bridge “bridges” the gap by placing an artificial tooth (called a pontic) between supporting teeth or restorations. Traditional bridges are anchored to the teeth on either side of the space, which are prepared and fitted with crowns to hold the bridge securely. In some cases, other bridge designs may be considered based on the location of the missing tooth, the health of neighboring teeth, and your bite.
Replacing missing teeth is about more than appearance. When a gap is left untreated, nearby teeth can drift, the opposing tooth may over-erupt, and the bite can become uneven. Over time, this can lead to jaw discomfort, increased tooth wear, and difficulty keeping the area clean. A well-made bridge helps maintain alignment, supports facial structure, and distributes chewing forces more evenly.
The bridge process usually involves two visits. First, your dentist prepares the supporting teeth, takes precise impressions (often digitally), and places a temporary bridge while your custom restoration is made. At the follow-up visit, the final bridge is fitted, adjusted for comfort, and cemented into place.
With good brushing and flossing, many bridges last for years. Special flossing tools, interdental brushes, or a water flosser can help clean around and beneath the pontic. Forest Hills Dental Associates will help you decide if a bridge is the right solution and create a result that feels comfortable and looks great.
