Dental sealants are a simple, preventive treatment that helps protect teeth from cavities—especially the back molars, where deep grooves can trap food and bacteria. At Forest Hills Dental Associates, sealants are commonly recommended for children and teens as soon as permanent molars erupt, but they can also benefit adults who are prone to decay or have naturally deep pits and fissures.
Even with good brushing habits, the chewing surfaces of molars can be difficult to clean thoroughly. Sealants create a smooth, protective barrier over the grooves, helping block out plaque, bacteria, and food particles that can lead to cavities. This added layer of protection can significantly reduce the risk of decay in areas where cavities are most likely to form.
The sealant process is fast, comfortable, and non-invasive—often completed in a single visit with no numbing required. First, the tooth is cleaned and dried. Next, the enamel is gently conditioned so the sealant bonds securely. A thin, tooth-colored resin is then applied to the chewing surface and hardened with a special curing light. Once set, the sealant begins protecting the tooth right away during everyday eating and chewing.
Sealants can last for several years, and your dentist will check them during routine exams to ensure they remain intact. If a sealant becomes worn or chipped, it can usually be repaired or replaced quickly.
When combined with regular cleanings, fluoride, and consistent home care, dental sealants are an effective way to prevent cavities and support long-term oral health. Forest Hills Dental Associates is happy to evaluate whether sealants are right for you or your child and help keep your smile protected and healthy.
