Strong home dental care is the most important step you can take to protect your smile between office visits. At Forest Hills Dental Associates, we encourage simple, consistent routines that help prevent cavities, reduce gum inflammation, and keep your breath fresh. Professional cleanings and exams are essential, but your day-to-day habits at home make the biggest impact on long-term oral health.
Start by brushing twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Gently angle the bristles toward the gumline and use small, controlled motions to remove plaque where it gathers most. Many patients find an electric toothbrush helps improve plaque removal and supports healthier gums. Replace your toothbrush or brush head every three months, or sooner if the bristles become worn.
Flossing once a day is just as important as brushing because it cleans between teeth and under the gumline where a toothbrush can’t reach. If traditional floss is difficult, consider floss picks, interdental brushes, or a water flosser—especially if you have bridges, implants, braces, or tight spacing. An alcohol-free antimicrobial rinse can help reduce bacteria, but it should complement—not replace—brushing and flossing.
Your diet matters too. Limit frequent snacking and sugary drinks, and reduce acidic beverages like soda, energy drinks, and citrus-heavy drinks that can soften enamel. Drink water throughout the day, and consider rinsing with water after coffee or acidic foods to help neutralize acids.
If you clench or grind your teeth, ask about a custom nightguard to prevent wear and fractures. Forest Hills Dental Associates can recommend the best tools and techniques for your specific needs, so your home routine keeps your smile healthy, comfortable, and confident.
